BIRDS

Red-breasted Merganser – 2 adults and 2 chicks, near Loch Glencoul, 29th June (J and M Allen)

Red-throated Diver – 5 near Loch Glencoul, 29th June (J and M Allen)

Wood Warbler – 1 singing Culag Wood, 28th June (Jane Young)

Red-throated Diver – 1 Achmelvich Bay, 28th June (D and A Haines)

Sand Martin – Colony of seven burrows at Achmelvich, 28th June (D and A Haines). If you are walking over the rocks to the north of Achmelvich Bay please take great care not to cause the edges of the sand banks to collapse as this will expose the nests and chicks which are very unlikely to survive in the open.

Common Scoter – 18 males and females Bay of Culkein, 27th June (D and A Haines)

Sanderling – 1 Bay of Culkein, 26th June (D and A Haines)

Long-tailed Tit – Party of nine adults and juveniles Culkein Drumbeg peat road, 26th June (D and A Haines)

Arctic Skua – 1 dark phase over Stoerhead Lighthouse, 25th June (D and A Haines)

Manx Shearewater – 5 off Stoerhead Lighthouse, 25th June (D and A Haines)

Greenshank – 2 Oldany Estuary, 25th June (D and A Haines)

Peregrine – 1 male over Culkein Drumbeg, 25th June (D and A Haines). This peregrine caused the Arctic Terns below to ‘dread’ but it took one of these highly agile birds in mid-air and carried it off towards Oldany.

Arctic Tern – c45 the colony on the off-shore islands at Culkein Drumbeg continues to grow each year but see the sighting above, 25th June (D and A Haines)

Fulmar – 40+ on cliffs to east of Stoer Point, 24th June (D and A Haines)

Whooper Swan – 1 Clashnessie beach, 15th June (R and E Kershaw)

Collared Flycatcher*** – Mega rare tick seen in the morning of 12th June at Raffin. Last seen 1.30pm. (David and June Hall) There have only been 5 records in Scotland ever and none in Highlands.SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

Barn Owl  – flew out of nest in outbuilding – near Stoer 12th June (Andy Summers).

Sand Martens – single pair excavating nest in sand banks at Clachtoll 11th June. Also big colony in bank of Ledmore river (Andy Summers).

White-tailed Sea Eagle – 2 near Kylesku bridge 8th June (both adults).

Golden Eagle – seen Inverkirkaig swooping and killing adult heron 7th June (reported by tourist – who wishes they had a camera at the time!).

Greylag Geese – 3 pairs with young at Loch an Aigeil, Stoer (one , two and five chicks) 5th june (Roz Summers).

Merlin – Inchnadamph chasing off buzzards 4th June.

2 Whimbrel – still at Clachtoll 2nd June (Andy Summers).

Linnet – 1 male visiting garden feeder, daily Torbreck 2nd June (Gwen Richards)

Black-tailed Godwit – 2 islandica race Loch an Aigeil, 2nd June (Gwen Richards)

Harbour Porpoise – At least three off Stoerhead Lighthouse, 26th June (D and A Haines)

Fragrant Orchid – many on roadside verge from Culkein Drumbeg to Oldany Estuary, 26th June (D and A Haines)

Otter – 1 male feeding off Rubh’an Dunain, 24th June (D and A Haines)

Bottlenose Dolphin – 3 feeding and breaching Loch Dhrombaig, 15th June (D and A Haines)

Otter – 2 Loch na Bruthaich Clashnessie, 10th June (Ian Polson)

Minke Whale – Stoerhead Lighthouse, 10th June (Anon visitors).

Small Heath Butterfly – Lochinver 7th June (first for the summer- Andy Summers).

Minke Whale – Stoerhead Lighthouse, 7th June (Anon visitors).

Orca – more sightings from the Lighthouse on the evening of 3rd June and during the morning of 5th June. Looks like the pod first seen on the 2nd is hanging around.

Adder – dead on road out of Lochinver 2nd June (reported)

Moonwort – 14 plants near Clachtoll split rock beach, 2nd June (Gwen Richards)

Red Wasp Vespula rufa – 1 in house Badnaban, 2nd June (L and L Pearce). One of four species of wasp recorded in Assynt, Photo on Gallery-Invertebrates Insect.

Orca – pod off Stoerhead Lighthouse, 2nd June (Anon visitors). Our first sighting this year and by early viewings of photographs it could be the same northern isles pod which was much in evidence in the Minch during 2012.
