Buzzard and Raven – 2 Buzzard and 5 Raven ‘playing’ over Elphin, 27th August (DAH). These birds did not try to get away from each other but kept flying back to each other and seemed to be talon grappling for fun.

Whimbrel – 91 Bay of Culkein, 20th August (DAH). This is a large number of these birds for Assynt and perhaps the recent very strong south-westerly winds has caused them to stop over on migration; a real treat to see so many.

Red-throated Diver – 1 adult Bay of Culkein, 17th August (DAH)

Black-tailed Godwit – 10 flew west over Culkein Drumbeg late afternoon and then early evening 55 adults were are at Bay of Culkein, 17th August (DAH). The birds at Bay of Culkein were the Icelandic race Limosa limosa islandica.

Little Grebe – 2 adults and 3 juveniles Loch na Claise, 8th August (DAH). Looks like our Little Grebe have had good breeding success this year with the same sighting made at Lochan Sgeireach on the 5th but clearly a different family group as the juveniles could not have made the trip from one location to the other.

Little Grebe – 2 adults and 3 juveniles Lochan Sgeireach, Stoer, 5th August (DAH)

Knot – 2 juvenile birds Rubh’an Dunain, 4th August (DAH). A further 15 Knot passed far out over Point of Stoer heading towards the Outer Hebrides. From this and the sightings below the Autumn passage migration is well under way so keep a good eye out for more waders and ‘odd’ gulls especially while these strong south-westerly winds continue.

Scotch Argus butterfly – A single on Little Assynt Loop Path, 2nd August (Claire Belshaw)

Sea Aster – 100’s in flower in saltmarsh at north side of Loch Roe, 1st August (Claire Belshaw). This is the only known location for this plant in Assynt.
