Eider – single female Loch Dhrombaig, 30th November (DAH). She was feeding on shellfish attached to frame of fish farm.

Black-headed Gull – 11 around fish farm Loch a’ Chairn Bhain, 28th November (DAH)

Herring Gull – c650 around fish farm Loch a’ Chairn Bhain, 28th November (DAH)

Treecreeper – single near Rientraid, 28th November (DAH)

Long-tailed Tit – 4 near Rientraid, 28th November (DAH)

Goldeneye – pair on Loch Ruighean an Aitinn (Drumbeg), 28th November (DAH)

Whooper Swan – 2 adults over Culkein Drumbeg, 28th November (DAH)

Gannet – 7 feeding off Rubh’an Dunain, 27th November (DAH)

Purple Sandpiper – 7 Rubh’an Dunain, 27th November (DAH)

Red-breasted Merganser – a pair Bay of Culkein, 27th November (DAH)

Black-headed Gull – 1st winter bird Bay of Culkein, 27th November (DAH)

Snow Bunting – 1 male Culkein Stoer, 27th November (DAH)

Goldeneye – 3 males Loch na Claise, 27th November (DAH)

Great Spotted Woodpecker – male Culkein Drumbeg, 25th November (DAH). Bird flew to wooden electricity power pole and went in to a hole; perhaps a roost site as it was getting dark.

Tawny Owl – single bird ‘keewicking’ Culkein Drumbeg, 24th November (DAH). This bird was calling at 17:10 when it was just too dark to see it.

Kestrel – male Culkein Drumbeg, 24th November (DAH)

Dipper – single bird feeding Loch an Aigeil, 24th November (DAH). This is an unusual record as we normally see Dipper on our fast flowing streams. Photo on Gallery-Birds.

Crossbill – 3 males Torbreck, probably Common Crossbill, 5th November (Gwen Richards). A rare record for Assynt but always nice to see.

Jack Snipe – 1 near Stoer, 5th November. This bird was brought to Andy Summers with a wing half torn off by a cat and sadly had to be put down.

Starling – 300+ Bay of Culkein, 1st November (DAH). These winter visitors are looking spectacular just now and are well worth a close look.

Teal – 13 (1 male, 12 female) Bay of Culkein, 1st November (DAH)

Redshank – 3 adult birds Bay of Culkein, 1st November (DAH)

Carrion Crow – single adult bird at Culkein Stoer, 1st and 5th November (DAH). A rare record for Assynt as our widespread ‘crow’ is the Hooded Crow.

Scarlet Waxcap fungus Hygrocybe coccinea – several fruiting bodies along with six other waxcap species near cattle grid Culkein Drumbeg, 23rd November (Ian and Pat Evans). These fungi are indicative of rich unimproved grassland. Photo on ‘Gallery-Fungi’.
