Eider – Female with 5 small chicks at Oldany, 24th May (AS)

Common Crane – 2 flying south over Ardvar/Nedd area, 23rd May (Don O’Driscoll). Could this be the same two birds that were at Loch na Claise in April?

Bullfinch – single male eating dandelion seeds in Lochinver garden, 22nd May (Dave McBain)

Mistle Thrush – 2 Gleann Leireag and single near Reintrad, 21st May (DAH)

Black-throated Diver – 2 Loch Drumbeg, 20th May (DAH)

Eider – 4 (3 male 1 female) off Culkein Drumbeg, 20th May (DAH)

Peregrine – 2 birds hunting cooperatively over Culkein Stoer/Bay of Culkein, 18th May (DAH). The impression from this activity was that one bird was ‘flushing’ waders from the croft land and seashore and then the second bird would pursue one of the birds put up, the first bird would then join in the pursuit. However it failed to work on all three occasions; the targeted Snipe and Ringed Plover were too quick!

Hoopoe – single bird in garden Lochinver, 9th May (Tony and Gill Frost). Another May record for this species which is famed for overshooting on is spring migration and turning up in odd locations. It winters in Africa and breeds in continental and eastern Europe.
