  • Wheatear: single male near Clashmore (DAH). Another of our spring migrants has started to arrive!
  • Harbour Porpoise: three off Stoer Head Lighthouse (DAH)
  • Great Skua: single bird flying past Stoer Head Lighthouse (DAH). This is the first 2018 Assynt record for this species.
  • Glaucous Gull: single 1st-winter bird off Stoer Head Lighthouse (DAH)
  • Kittiwake: 60+ off Stoer Head Lighthouse (DAH)

  • Stoat: single animal still in full ermine Clachtoll (DAH)
  • Skylark: 14 flying over Clachtoll (DAH)
  • Lapwing: single bird feeding on Stoer Green (DAH)

  • Lapwing: 25 flying around Culkein Stoer (Lesley Sleight and Annella Bulch)
  • Meadow Pipit: 20 feeding on grazing land around old cemetery Stoer (Bill and Val Badger)

13th March 2018

  • Black-throated Diver: single bird on Maiden Loch near Clachtoll (Paul Burnett)
  • Frogspawn: 10+ clumps in road ditch Pollachapuill road, Culkein Drumbeg (Ian Evans). One clump was frosted indicating it had possibly been in situ since the last night of minus temperatures which was 9th/10th March.
  • Curlew: 15+ Stoer Green (Ian Evans)

12th March 2018

  • Goosander: single male on River Inver (Gwen Richards)
  • Orca: two sighted off Clachtoll at around 08:30; one was a male (Pat Cheyne)
  • Goldeneye: pair on River Inver near Little Assynt (Paul Burnett)
  • Harbour Porpoise: six separate sightings off Stoer Head Lighthouse including a mother and calf (DAH)
  • Eider: 48+ off Stoer Head Lighthouse (DAH) 
  • Red-throated Diver: six off Stoer Head Lighthouse (DAH)
  • Badger: two animals in Nedd garden (Ian Evans). One of these animals was a full adult however, the other was clearly an immature but it had a sandy-coloured coat
  • Common Frog: at least three in garden pond Nedd (Ian Evans), The following day, 13th March, there were 10+ frogs and one clump of spawn.

  • Female snow bunting: single female near the old fank at the top of Glenleraig (Beccy Garvey)
  • Woodcock: single bird feeding in Badnaban garden (Les and Liz Pearce)
  • Bird song: a slight rise in temperature today and we recorded the following species singing; Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Great Tit and Coal Tit, all Culkein Drumbeg (DAH)
  • Greenfinch: two males Culkein Drumbeg (DAH)
  • Thrushes: six Mistle Thrush, four Fieldfare, three Blackbirds and a single Song Thrush, all Culkein Drumbeg (DAH)

  • Woodcock: two birds just outside Nedd garden (Ian Evans)
  • Tufted Duck: four including three males on Loch na Claise (AS)
  • Jack Snipe: single flushed from wet area at Clachtoll (AS)
  • Greylag Goose: 34 on Clachtoll crofts (AS)
  • Whooper Swan: family group of two adults and four immature at Lochan Sgeireach, Stoer (AS)
  • Lapwing: single bird flying near Loch an Aigeil (Stuart Belshaw)
  • Pine Marten: single animal in the vicinity of Lochinver Primary School (Fiona Carter)

  • Whooper Swan: six birds (2 adults, 4 1st-winter) Loch an Aigeil (DAH). This is very likely a family group with last year's youngsters still with their parents. Photo on Birds Gallery.
