26th December 2018

  • Barn Owl: single bird hunting along roadside at 9.30pm, Inchnadamph (DAH)

25th December 2018

  • White-tailed Eagle: three birds lazily quartering the ground over Oldany Island and Eilean Chrona for over an hour (DAH)
  • Sparrowhawk: single female over Stoerhead Lighthouse (DAH)
  • Pipistrelle bat: single bat flying at dusk on Torbreck croft (Gwen Richards)

24th December 2018

  • Siskin: 20+ birds in Elphin garden (Rosie Christmas). A flock of this size usually arrives in this garden late January/early February so is over a month early (from observations over past 11 years)

  • Chaffinch: 37 birds feeding on ground, Culkein Drumbeg (DAH)

  • Goosander: single female on River Inver opposite Little Assynt Tree Nursery (DAH)
  • Dipper: four birds on River Inver opposite Little Assynt Tree Nursery (DAH). One bird could be seen, and heard, singing.
  • Otter: two animals on the shore beside Church of Scotland, Lochinver (Gwen Richards)

  • Red-breasted Merganser: seven birds (4 male, 3 female) Oldany estuary (DAH)
  • Black Guillemot: three winter plumage birds Loch Dhrombaig (DAH)

  • Kestrel: single bird over Clachtoll (Robert Kinnaird, et al.)
  • Oystercatcher: 11 birds Bay of Culkein (DAH). On 18-09-2018 we had a colour ringed Oystercatcher in the same location; one of today's birds was also colour ringed and it turns out to be the same bird. Unless this bird has been seen, and reported, at other locations in the interim we can't be sure it ever left Assynt. If we get more information from the Iceland Wader Group we will let you know. UPDATE - there have been no other reported sightings of this bird since September.
