  • Common Sandpiper: Pair in suitable habitat beside Maiden Loch, Clachtoll (AS)

28th April 2019

  • Speckled Wood butterfly: four near Ardroe (Claire Belshaw)
  • Emperor Moth: single female on steps of Church of Scotland, Lochinver (Jane Young)
  • Sedge Warbler: three birds singing from reed beds, Loch na Claise (DAH)
  • Golden Plover: 85 birds over Balchladich (DAH)
  • Harbour Porpoise: two animals off Stoerhead Lighthouse (DAH)
  • Pink-footed Goose: c150 off Stoerhead Lighthouse heading north-west (DAH)
  • Whimbrel: 7 on Clachtoll crofts (AS)

26th April 2019

  • White-tailed Eagle: two adult birds high above Eilean Chrona heading west (DAH) 
  • Golden Plover: 40+ birds over Stoer (DAH)

25th April 2019

  • Emperor Moth: three moths in Badnaban garden (Dave Bird). There were initially a pair mating but the male was dispatched by a Robin and shortly after a second male arrived.
  • Harbour Porpoise: two animals off Bay of Stoer (Tam Barnshaw) and three off Stoerhead Lighthouse (DAH)
  • Great Northern Diver: 11 birds in Bay of Stoer (DAH). A couple of these birds were in full summer plumage.
  • Common Tern: two birds feeding, Bay of Stoer (DAH)

24th April 2019

  • Tree Wasp (Dolichovespula sylvestris): single wasp in Stoer garden (Claire Belshaw)
  • Magpie: single bird Raffin (June and David Hall). Now the fourth record of this species in Assynt with the last one being 16 April 2018.
  • Grasshopper Warbler: single 'reeling' bird, Little Assynt Tree Nursery (Val Badger)
  • Blackcap: single singing male at beginning of path to Kirkaig Falls, Inverkirkaig (Gwen Richards)
  • Speckled Wood butterfly: two butterflies on Torbreck croft (Gwen Richards)
  • Stoat: single animal climbing up house drainpipe, Clachtoll (Susie Bower-Browng)

  • Cuckoo: two birds seen and heard Drumbeg peat road (DAH)
  • Chiffchaff: single bird singing Cnoc Glas, Drumbeg (DAH)

22nd April 2019

  • Black Grouse: single male bird near Ledbeg House (John Venters)
  • Black-spotted longhorn beetle (Rhagium mordax): single in Achmelvich garden (Richard Evans)
  • Palmate Newt: two in Loch Leathad a'Phris Droighinn, Clachtoll (Ian Evans and Gwen Richards). One of these was a male in breeding condition.
  • Green-veined White: single butterfly in Nedd garden (Ian Evans)

  • Blackcap: single bird singing around Nedd garden (Ian Evans). Still present on 22-4-19
  • Black Guillemot: four birds on cliffs to the north of Bay of Stoer (Val Badger)
  • Barn Owl: single bird near Loch Roe (Richard Evans)
  • Coot: two birds, Loch na Claise (DAH)
  • Moorhen: two birds, Loch na Claise (DAH)
  • Bay of Culkein: As there were many records from here today it is simplest to post some of them under the location -Common Gull 42; Black-headed Gull 3; Dunlin 10; Ringed Plover 29; Turnstone 1; Sanderling 1; Black-tailed Godwit 7; Golden Plover 12; Red-throated Diver 2; Great Northern Diver 2; Long-tailed Duck 1; Pink-footed Goose 28; Barnacle Goose 9; White Wagtail 10 (DAH)
  • Shelduck: single male Culkein Drumbeg harbour area, also a male and two females Bay of Culkein (DAH)
  • Eider: 15 birds (8 male, 7 female) Culkein Drumbeg harbour area (DAH)

  • Osprey: First bird of the season carrying stick near Elphin, towards Loch Urigill direction (AS)

  • Common Carder Bee: single bumblebee nectaring on Primroses and Dog Violets near Oldany (DAH)
  • Peacock Butterfly: single worn butterfly on car mirror near Oldany (DAH). This will be an overwintering adult that has recently emerged from hibernation.

  • Red Admiral: single butterfly nectaring on dandelions in Nedd garden (Ian Evans). Dandelions are an important food source at this time of year for many insect species so please don't kill them.

  • Pink-footed Goose: single skein of c80 birds heading west over Culkein Drumbeg (DAH)

  • Cuckoo: single bird heard in Drumbeg (Wendy Glover). A very early first date for Cuckoo in Assynt. 2018's first date was 18th April and 2017 was 25th April.

8th April 2019

  • Hairy Rock-cress (Arabis hirsuta): three plants on crag east of Loch Leathad a'Phris Droighinn, Clachtoll (Gordon Rothero, Ian Evans and Gwen Richards). Three rosettes found on 8th; in flower on revisit by GR and IME on 22nd; first record for Assynt since 1969.
  • Long-tailed Tit: two birds, one carrying nesting material, Culag Wood, Lochinver (DAH)
  • Red-breasted Merganser: pair on Loch Inver (Vickii Campen)
  • Bullfinch: two males at opposite corners of Culag Woods, Lochinver (DAH)
