Long-tailed Skua – 8 past Stoerhead Lighthouse and 5 past Clachtoll, 19th May (D and A Haines). A rare sight in Assynt and at this time of year their tail streamers were really obvious.

Pink-footed Goose – unseen but heard flying over Culkein Drumbeg, 31st March (D and A Haines) Looks like spring is well on its way with these geese making their spring migration to the north-west.

BIRDS and WAXWING sightings

White-tailed Eagle – 1 (adult) over Scron, 27th December (A. Summers) This helps soften the blow of the dead eagle from the 23rd, a bit!

Barn Owl – 1 in Clachtoll garden, 26th December (A. Cook)

White-tailed Eagle – Sadly this was a report of a dead bird on the beach at Balchladich on 23rd December (A. Roberts). Andy Summers visited the site on the 26th and removed a leg ring and coloured wing tag from it so that the bird’s history can be obtained.

Brent Goose – 10 Bay of Culkein and 6 Clashnessie Bay, 28th September. All these birds were of the ‘pale bellied’ race which arrive at this time from Greenland or Arctic Canada.

Red-breasted Merganser – 4 (females) Loch Druim Suardalain, 27th September

Golden Eagle – 2 over Clachtoll, 31st August (AV)

Short-eared Owl – 1 near Loch Crom, Glencanisp, 31st August (AS). A rare sighting for Assynt of a species which may be under-recorded.

Red Kite – 2 over Stoer, 28th August. The second sighting of two Kites in as many months.
