‘Highland Butterflies’ Field Club indoor meeting

Article first published in the Assynt News during October 2014

Assynt Field Club was delighted to welcome guest speaker David McAllister on 16th October to the first of its 2014/15 programme of talks. David, who is Chair and founding member of Tain and District Field Club, delivered a fascinating and very colourful talk on ‘Highland Butterflies’.

With 31 species of butterflies now recorded in Highland, David could only give an overview of the historic and current status of a selected few of these stunning creatures. He did however offer a more detailed account of his three favourite butterflies, the Orange Tip, Speckled Wood and Small Blue using records from 1970 to present to show their spread, and in some areas decline, not just in Highland but the British Isles as a whole.

Hints on suitable plants which provide butterflies with nectar were also part of David’s presentation. He also emphasised the importance of having a range of plants which provide food throughout the year.

A great start to the indoor season which continues on Thursday 20th November when Natalie Young will highlight the current status of, and the threats to, our fresh water mussels in her ‘Pearls in Peril’ presentation. This will take place in the Assynt Centre, Kirk Road, Lochinver at 7.45 p.m. with the usual entry fee of £3.00 including delicious refreshments.
