Flora of Assynt: introduction by Pat and Ian Evans

The Flora of Assynt (Evans, Evans and Rothero, 2002) was the first published account of the botany of any area in Highland Scotland surveyed and mapped at the level of tetrad (2 x 2 km square). The distribution maps and text are based on fieldwork undertaken by Pat and Ian Evans during 1988-2001 (flowering plants and ferns), and by Gordon Rothero during 1992-2001 (bryophytes).

We recorded 694 species of flowering plants and ferns, of which 133 were ‘new’ to the area, with historical records of a further 71. Gordon recorded 156 species of liverworts and 345 of mosses, with historical records of a further 14 liverworts and 20 mosses; at least 34 species were ‘new’ to West Sutherland, of which Assynt forms part.

The Flora is illustrated with maps and landscape photographs in colour. It has extensive introductory sections on the boundaries, geology, climate and landscape history of Assynt, followed by accounts of the vegetation and bryophyte communities, together with the history of recording and survey methodology for both groups. It also has a comprehensive bibliography, a gazetteer of all place names used in the text and full indices to scientific and English names.

Since the Flora is now out of print, the text has been made available on this web-site. It is also lodged, with supporting documentation, on the Assynt Community Archive. We welcome any observations of interest or queries, and can be contacted at assyntwildlife@gmail.com.
