  • Chiffchaff: singing male at Inverkirkaig (AS)
  • Greenshank: pair calling Loch Awe (AS)
  • Swallow: single flying over Ledmore (AS)
  • Magpie: single bird near Clashnessie (DAH). This is only the third record of this species for Assynt with the previous being Lochinver on 15-04-1986 and Loch Assynt Lodge on 20-03-1992. These are all likely to be vagrant birds from the east coast.
  • Black-throated Diver: five off Clashnessie Bay (DAH)

  • Great Northern Diver: two off entrance to Loch Nedd (Bill Gray)
  • Blackcap: pair in Nedd (Bill Gray)
  • Small Tortoiseshell: single in garden at Clachtoll (AS)
  • Willow warbler: short burst of song heard in Nedd at 6.05am (Ian Evans)
  • Ring Ouzel: single female Knockan Crag (Ian Macdonald)

  • Risso’s Dolphin: 10+ off Stoer Head Lighthouse (Tam and Cilla Barnshaw/DAH)
  • Harbour Porpoise: single off Culkein Stoer (DAH) and numerous sightings of ones and twos throughout the day off Stoer Head Lighthouse (DAH/Tam and Cilla Barnshaw)
  • Red-necked Grebe: single adult gaining summer plumage still showing well, Bay of Culkein (DAH)
  • Pied Wagtail: 15 and a single White Wagtail, Bay of Culkein (DAH)
  • Teal: three (two males one female) Loch Neil Bhain (DAH)
  • White-tailed Bumblebee: two feeding on flowering currant bushes with c200 honey bees, Clachtoll (AS)
  • Roe deer: single female crossing road near Oldany (Ian Evans)
  • Lapwing: single bird displaying over fields with cattle, Ledmore Junction (Ian Evans)
  • Small Tortoiseshell: single in Badnaban garden (Liz & Les Pearce)

13th April 2018

  • Great Northern Diver: 10 Clashnessie Bay (DAH). Some of these birds were starting to obtain their breeding plumage.
  • Red-throated Diver: single bird Clashnessie Bay (DAH)
  • Tufted Duck: four, 3 males 1 female, Lochan Sgeireach (DAH)
  • Black-throated Diver: two still showing well on Loch Drumbeg (DAH)

  • Common Lizard: single animal dashing across road near Pollachapuill, Culkein Drumbeg (Ian Evans)

  • Willow Warbler: two birds feeding in garden at Ardvar (DAH)
  • Lesser Redpoll: c35 over Loch na Mola, Ardvar (DAH)
  • Siskin: pair in Ardvar garden (DAH)

9th April 2018

  • Corncrake: male singing for 24hours near Loch Neil Bhain, Stoer before moving on, (Ruth Grant). This also ties in with a possible sighting in an Achnacarnin garden the day before (John and Janet Morgan).
  • Orca: two animals c5000 metres off Stoer Lighthouse (DAH). One of these had a completely flopped over dorsal fin so we can be pretty sure these animals were not part of the west coast population; it is likely that they are Icelandic Orca. Sadly they were too far out for meaningful photos.
  • Risso’s Dolphin: four females c1000 metres off Stoer Lighthouse (DAH)
  • Harbour Porpoise: two animals off Stoer Lighthouse (DAH)
  • Common Scoter: single female off Clachtoll (DAH)
  • Great Northern Diver: five off Clachtoll (DAH)
  • Pink-footed Goose: c325 over Clachtoll and c130 over Stoer Lighthouse (DAH)
  • Redwing: 30 in garden, 83 Torbreck (Gwen Richards). Later in the day a further 60 were in trees on the croft around the house.

  • Goldeneye: pair on Loch Drumbeg (DAH)
  • Palmate Newt: single dead animal on road Culkein Drumbeg (DAH)

  • Red-throated Diver: two birds in breeding plumage Loch Dhrombaig (DAH)

5th April 2018

  • Red-necked Grebe: single bird moving from winter to breeding plumage, Bay of Culkein (DAH). This is the first record of this species in Assynt since 1997 and only the third ever. Photo Gallery - Birds
  • Black-throated Diver: pair on Loch Drumbeg (DAH). This is not a breeding loch but a pair turn up here annually, probably before they move to their breeding site.

4th April 2018
