  • Redwing: four birds in Achnacarnin garden (Jean Cousens)
  • Long-tailed Duck: two birds still showing well, Clashnessie Bay (Norman Fry, Liz Burns, et al.)
  • Hen Harrier: single bird over Clashnessie Bay (Norman Fry)

27th October 2020

  • Whooper Swan: six birds flying over Ardvar garden (Beccy Garvey)
  • Common Dolphin: 36+ very active animals off Bay of Stoer (DAH)
  • Great Northern Diver: four birds off Bay of Stoer and two in Clashnessie Bay (DAH)
  • Curlew: 15 birds over Bay of Stoer (DAH)
  • Feathered Thorn: single male moth Nedd, inside front porch of house (Ian Evans)
  • Cut-leaved dead-nettle (Lamium hybridum): single plant in Stoer garden vegetable beds (Ian Evans).   Only one previous record in Flora of Assynt, from Lochinver

26th October 2020

  • Long-tailed Duck: two birds (male and a female/juvenile) Clashnessie Bay and a single juvenile Bay of Clachtoll (Ian Bailey and James Brander). The two Clashnessie birds were still showing well on 27-10-20 (DAH)

25th October 2020

  • Great Northern Diver: six birds in a variety of plumages, Loch Dhrombaig (DAH)
  • Magpie: single bird Clashmore (Ian Bailey)
  • Woodcock: single bird on Torbreck croft (Gwen Richards)

23rd October 2020

  • Long-tailed Duck: single winter plumage male on Loch Dhrombaig (DAH). This was a different bird from the one in Clashnessie Bay the day before, it was female. Photos Gallery - Birds

  • Winter Thrushes: two Redwing and a single Fieldfare, Clachtoll (Duncan Orr-Ewing). The first record as the thrushes start to arrive in Assynt and eat the Rowan berries.

  • Long-tailed Tit: 6+ birds Quinag, east of Bad na Fearnaig in isolated row of downy birches (Gwen Richards and Ian Evans)
  • Red-necked Grebe: single bird, Loch Inver (Duncan Orr-Ewing)
  • Harbour Porpoise: two animals off Bay of Clachtoll (DAH)
  • Great Northern Diver: three birds, two still in much of their breeding plumage, off Bay of Clachtoll (DAH)

  • Common Dolphin: 20+ seen from kayak 1-2km off Achmelvich (Mike Dawber)
  • Red Admiral: Single on Buddleia at Clachtoll (AS)
  • Eider: raft of 20 birds off Stoerhead Lighthouse (DAH)
  • Otter: single animal feeding around rocks below Stoerhead Lighthouse (DAH)
  • Common Dolphin: large and small pods totalling 75+ animals off Stoerhead Lighthouse (DAH/Geoff Pringle)
  • Harbour Porpoise: pod of eight animals off Stoerhead Lighthouse (Geoff Pringle)

  • Whooper Swan: 44 birds sheltered at the east end of Loch Assynt for c30 minutes during spell of very windy weather before taking off to the north-west (Helen Morrison & Chris Rix). We have two short videos of this which we hope to post on our Facebook page later today.
