  • Harbour Porpoise: 12+ very active animals, including young, Bay of Stoer (Charlie Leeson)

26th August 2021

  • Common Seal: Single animal close to shore, Bay of Clachtoll (Charlie Leeson).  Obviously curious about the paddle boarders and kayakers in the bay, swimming within 5m at times.

  • Black-throated Diver: Single juvenile bird off Culkein Stoer (DAH)

19th August 2021

  • Harbour Porpoise: Four, possibly more, feeding in Bay of Clachtoll (Andrew Powers)
  • Merlin: Single bird at Split Rock, Bay of Clachtoll (Andrew Powers). It appeared from North of the headland and made a sustained, but unsuccessful, effort to catch one of a flock of 22 linnets feeding on the rocks and turf. Following this it perched on the rocks but was dive bombed and driven off by an Arctic tern. This was repeated a further two times before the merlin disappeared from view to the north reappearing few minutes later and taking a direct route from Split Rock to Achmelvich Bay.
  • Arctic Tern: Two birds at Split Rock, Bay of Clachtoll (Andrew Powers). One harassed a passing Great Skua then drove off a female Merlin by dive-bombing. Later seen to harass a Herring Gull and Lesser Black-backed Gull. Subsequently seen perched on seaward end of Split Rock with a second adult bird
  • Linnet: 22 birds, a mix of adults and juveniles with some young begging for food, Split Rock, Bay of Clachtoll (Andrew Powers)
  • Sparrowhawk: Single female flying south, Bay of Clachtoll (Andrew Powers)
  • Red-throated Diver: Four birds feeding around mouth of bay for over an hour, Bay of Clachtoll (Andrew Powers)
  • Eider: Six birds feeding Bay of Clachtoll (Andrew Powers)
  • Cetaceans: Four, possibly more, Dolphin in Bay of Clachtoll (Andrew Powers).  The animals were too far out to identify at species level
  • Red-throated Diver: Nine birds, Bay of Stoer (DAH)

18th August 2021

  • Black-throated Diver: At least 11 birds, including one juvenile, at north end of Achmelvich Bay (Andrew Powers)
  • Black-tailed Godwit: Single bird roosting on beach with c15 oystercatchers, Bay of Culkein (Morag Moir)
  • Common Seal: Single animal off Split Rock, Bay of Clachtoll (Tracy Mason-Powers & Andrew Powers)
  • Whimbrel: Three birds flying north over Clachtoll (Andrew Powers)

  • White-tailed Eagle: Single juvenile bird, Bay of Clachtoll (Andrew Powers).  The bird was heading steadily north along coastline being harassed by a single Great Black-backed Gull. Moulting flight feathers in right wing.
  • Arctic Skua: Single bird (pale morph) by Split Rock, Bay of Clachtoll (Andrew & Derek Powers)

  • Black-throated Diver: 16 birds off Port Alltan na Bradhan (Hester Cox)
  • Sanderling: Seven birds (1 adult, 6 juvenile) Clashnessie Bay (DAH)
  • Twite: c60 birds around car park for, and up at Stoer Head Lighthouse (DAH/Morag Moir)
  • Swallow: c20 birds over car park at Stoer Head Lighthouse (DAH/Morag Moir)
  • Risso’s Dolphin: Single animal off Stoer Head Lighthouse (DAH/Morag Moir)

  • Cuckoo: Single juvenile being fed by meadow pipits, near Allt nan Uamh Bone Caves (Grace Banks)
  • Grayling butterfly: Single insect, Loch Roe (Andy and Liz Amphlett)

10th August 2021

  • Black-throated Diver: Four birds, Clashnessie Bay (Grace Banks)
  • Cetaceans: Probably three Minke Whales (one less than 150metres out), 25+ Common Dolphin and numerous Harbour Porpoise with one group of five animals, all off Stoer Head Lighthouse (DAH)
  • Gannet: 275+ birds loafing on the sea off Stoer Head Lighthouse (DAH). These birds were c2.5km out and were part of huge rafts of mixed seabirds. No exact total but several thousand birds present. Would tend to indicate that lots of food was present as several cetaceans were also in the same area.
  • Arctic Skua: Four birds minimum harassing Kittiwake off Stoer Head Lighthouse (DAH)
  • Sparrowhawk: Single female hunting near Raffin (DAH)
  • Stoat: Single animal on crofts near road bridge, Clashnessie (Morag Moir)
  • Grey Wagtail: Single bird near road bridge, Clashnessie (Morag Moir)
