Drawings of Desmids from Assynt by D. B. Williamson

David has been studying desmids for 60+years and published extensively.

His paper ‘A Survey of the Desmid Flora of Assynt, West Sutherland’ was originally published in the Botanical Journal of Scotland in 1996. That paper details the results of the examination of 79 samples taken in Assynt between March 1993 and September 1994 and lists 291 taxa. Over half the 79 samples were collected by Ian and Pat Evans of Nedd while the remainder were collected by the author himself.

David, who is now in his 93rd year, continues to receive, examine, determine and draw samples of desmids from Ian Evans. These drawings are exquisite and a number of them can be viewed in the links below.

Gleann Ardbhair 2020

Drawings produced during May 2020 from vegetation sample obtained on 5 May 2020 from small pool in burn next to gate in deer enclosure south-eastern half of Gleann Ardbhair. There is also a hand written note by David to Ian Evans about the samples. The final drawing of this batch has a small annotation by David recording the fact it was drawn on his 92nd birthday.
